Skin Surgery
When it comes to skin conditions that may require surgical excision, understanding the process and potential complications is crucial. Here's a detailed overview of our skin surgery services and what patients can expect:
Skin Surgery for Various Conditions:
1. Epidermoid Cyst: A benign growth under the skin, often filled with keratin.
2. Lipoma: A non-cancerous fatty tumour that typically feels soft and moves easily under the skin.
3. Large Mole: Moles that are deemed potentially concerning or cosmetically bothersome.
4. Large Pedunculated Skin Tag: Skin tags that are sizable and need surgical removal.
5. Plantar corn: Corns are painful, thickened skin lesions that result of repeated friction and pressure. It common occurs and soles.
The Surgical Procedure:
1. Skin Preparation: This involves marking the surgical site and disinfecting the area to minimize infection risk.
2. Local Anaesthesia: A local anaesthetic is injected to numb the area, ensuring a painless procedure.
3. Skin Incision: A precise incision is made to access the lesion.
4. Lesion Removal: The lesion is carefully separated from surrounding tissues and removed.
5. Haemostasis: Any bleeding is controlled to maintain a clear surgical field.
6. Cleaning: The wound is thoroughly cleaned to prevent infection.
7. Primary Closure: The wound is closed using sutures (typically removed 7 to 10 days after the procedure).
8. Dressing: A sterile dressing is applied to protect the surgical site.
While skin surgery is generally safe, potential complications may include:
- Bleeding: Excessive bleeding during or after the procedure.
- Infection: Infection at the surgical site, leading to wound breakdown
- Scarring: Some degree of scarring is expected, though our techniques aim to minimize it.
- Pain: The discomfort or pain after surgery is usually minimal and manageable with 1 to 2 days medication.
- Delayed Healing: In some cases, wounds may take longer to heal completely. Factors that may delay the healing include older age, medical conditions, wound infection, and poor wound care.
